The terms “high-functioning autism” and “Asperger’s syndrome” were once used to describe individuals on the autism spectrum who have average or above-average intelligence and strong language skills. However, in 2013, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) combined both under the single diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
The main difference was historical: people with Asperger’s were seen as having fewer language delays, while those with high-functioning autism might have had early speech challenges. Today, professionals no longer use these separate labels instead, autism is described in levels based on the type and amount of support a person needs.
Regardless of the term, every autistic individual has unique strengths and challenges. With the right therapy and support, they can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
