Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is built on three core principles that guide how learning and behavior change happen: antecedent, behavior, and consequence often called the ABCs of ABA.

  1. Antecedent: This is what happens before a behavior. It could be a request, a situation, or an environmental trigger. Understanding the antecedent helps identify what causes or prompts a behavior.
  2. Behavior: This is the action the child takes. It can be anything observable, like speaking, crying, or completing a task. ABA focuses on teaching positive, functional behaviors while reducing challenging ones.
  3. Consequence: This is what happens after the behavior. It influences whether the behavior will happen again. Positive reinforcement is often used to increase desired behaviors, while inappropriate responses are gently redirected.

By understanding and applying these three steps, ABA therapy helps children with autism build communication, social, and daily living skills in a structured, meaningful way.
